On Wednesday 19th March 2014 we invited organisations to join us at The Cabinet War Photo4 Rooms in London to ‘Take a Closer Look’ at Juniper Networks. The aim of the event was to build relationships with organisations interested in having face to face time with Netutils and Juniper Networks’ technical experts and to learn about the latest innovations in datacentre and campus and branch networking & security from Juniper Networks.

The War Rooms lent itself extremely well to the event. Churchill’s bunker was the perfect place to take stock and work together to strategise and address some of the networking & security challenges we face in today’s constantly evolving enterprise.

APhoto2t the top of the day the ice was expertly broken by Major Wade & Mrs Hughes our 1940’s actors. Wade and Hughes welcomed our guests to the War Rooms and delivered a wonderfully entertaining introduction to the War Rooms complete with whistle blowing and bell ringing! Once our guests were reassured they were safe underground the event commenced.

David Silsby, Sales & Marketing Director introduced the details of the day to our guests and explained how Netutils’ goal as an organisation and Juniper Networks Elite Partner is to help make sure our customer’s technology does what it is supposed to. Supporting organisations to ensure their networks are fast, secure and available to the right person at the right time, making sure we give you access to technology when and where you need it.

Next up was Brett Ley, Director, Datacentre Sales EMEA. His presentation focused on Innovations in Datacentre Networking & Security. In a world of ever-changing apps, evolving virtualisation and the rapid adoption of cloud, mobility and big data technology, today’s network needs to be incredibly agile. Brett Introduced Juniper Networks’ MetaFabric Architecture—a simple, open and smart approach to network architecture. MetaFabric leverages Juniper Networks’ comprehensive portfolio of switching, routing, orchestration, SDN and security solutions.

  • Switches optimised for the data centre to support any switching fabric architecture for any application.
  • Routers that interconnect multiple data centre locations and clouds, across virtual, physical, and SDN workloads.
  • SDN solutions that automate and orchestrate creation of virtual networks.
  • Data centre security solutions that adapt to defend, detect, and respond to targeted threats.
  • Automation and orchestration management tools that provide network visualisation, analysis, and control.

The Benefits

The MetaFabric architecture solves the complexity of creating a network for today’s data centre landscape. It has three pillars:

Simple – Enables ease of deployment, operations and management of the network without service interruption.

Open – Maximises flexibility by integrating with any data centre environment, eliminating vendor lock-in.

Smart – Saves time and improves the performance of the network through data, analytics, and actionable insights.

The bottom line is that the MetaFabric architecture delivers the agile and efficient network foundation required for today’s dynamic data centres.

Photo3Netutils Senior Technical Specialist, Malcolm Orekoya then delivered an overview & demo of Junos Space.

Exponential growth in network traffic, changes in mobile user behaviour, and the onslaught of new cloud services and applications are expanding the avenues available to malicious attackers. Managing enterprise security policy in these complex environments can become prone to error and overly time-consuming, especially if management solutions are slow, unintuitive, or restricted in their level of granularity and control. Poor policy management can also lead to security mis-configuration, making the enterprise vulnerable to sophisticated threats and regulatory noncompliance.

Junos Space is an open, secure, and scalable software platform that allows customers, partners, and developers to build and deploy simple, smart applications that manage and analyse network element data and optimise network infrastructure and operations management of infrastructure running the Junos operating system. Malcolm demonstrated the attributes of the Junos Space solution that allows customers to maximise their network value and scale solutions while reducing complexity.

Malcolm demonstrated two main applications of Junos Space – Network Director & Security Director. Security Director provides efficient and cost effective management of Juniper Networks SRX security platform and allows you to scale management reach across your security and network devices and ease administration and reduce configuration errors through a responsive Web interface. Network Director offers a unified wired and wireless network management application for Juniper Networks switching and wireless portfolio, featuring full life cycle management including pre and post deployment life cycle tools with single pane visibility to manage Network infrastructure, users and services.

Jonas Gyllenhammar, Pulse Architect, EMEA concluded the session with his presentation on Innovations in campus & branch networking and security.

The ability to access anything from anywhere is the new norm in today’s world of communication. This creates a lot of concerns when it comes to corporate data being accessed securely.

It is not only the challenge of the mixture of managed and un-managed devices and their security state but also the protection of actual valuable data that needs protection.

This requires a new echo system involving secure access and intelligent firewalling to bring together security intelligence and deception techniques from multiple sources.

What was really engaging about Jonas’ session was his point that the phenomenon of BYOD is not simply about bringing your own device, its more than that; it’s about a robust access management policy solution for your organisation and this requires a dynamic policy driven security enforcement solution. A bit of a mouthful perhaps but Juniper Networks’ end-to-end Pulse solution makes this straightforward. In short, it’s simply about 2 things:

The User – are they known or unknown?

The Device – corporately owned? BYOD, staff member with an unknown device? Or Guest with an unknown device?

Junos Pulse allows you to combine different users and devices. An end-to-end solution which covers all use cases delivering network wide policy orchestration.

Jonas spent some time detailing the different attributes of the Pulse solution – profiling, on-boarding, authentication, device / user authentication, role based access and network wide automatic threat mitigation. The Pulse solution keeps BYOD simple. It supports the requirement that users need BYOD in different flavours – light and full access. As well as providing full network access to known users and devices, it’s vital to have a simple identity based guest access solution for Wi-Fi access, keeping you compliant and secure. In short, Pulse allows you to deliver the right policies for the right use cases, making the access and on-boarding experience seamless for the user.

Jonas also introduced our audience to Junos WebApp Secure (JWas) Jonas demonstrated how easy it is to detect, identify, track and stop hackers in their tracks. The simple, clean interface of the solution allows for easy monitoring. Junos Web App Secure looks at two areas – Certainty and Specificity. This ensures that you are blocking the right activity without impacting your business, and identifying malicious behaviour that other solutions can’t even start to think about finding.

The demonstration of Junos WebApp Secure illustrates how the Juniper Networks’ security ecosystem adapts at the speed of risk, where allowing easy access is balanced with stopping attackers from getting what they want.

Securing BYOD & Beyond
Jonas Gyllenhammar, Sr Consulting Engineer, Pulse Architect, EMEA at Juniper Networks

Securing the Datacentre
John Pennington, Security Sales Specialist, UKI at Juniper Networks

John’s session covered Juniper Networks’ security strategy. Combined with Juniper’s leadership in firewalls, remote access and their broad security product portfolio, they are the leaders in data centre security. John emphasised that whilst next generation firewalls and “inside-out” security threats are important, the most critical threat facing enterprises today is the emerging ‘outside-in’ threat, which accounts for 73% of all modern attacks. To counter this menace from sophisticated, persistent and well-funded organised groups trying to steal your customers’ money and intellectual property, Juniper have been aggressively investing in leading-edge technology to help secure the data centre now and in the future.

Juniper Networks’ have a suite of security solutions which augment the firewall to protect your business critical web applications.

Junos DDoS Secure
DDos attacks are becoming more and more prevalent and are a major problem for online businesses. Junos DDoS Secure can nullify these problems by continually monitoring and logging all inbound and outbound Web traffic. Junos DDoS Secure uses its CHARM algorithm, a sophisticated heuristic algorithm, to separate malicious from legitimate traffic, and is able to respond intelligently and in real time by dropping suspect or noncompliant packets as soon as the optimum performance from critical resources begins to degrade. DDoS Secure guarantees availability for legitimate users, even under the most extreme attack conditions with zero false positives.

Junos WebApp Secure
Juniper Networks Junos WebApp Secure is the first Web Intrusion Deception System that detects, tracks, profiles and prevents hackers in real-time.

Traditional web application firewalls are seriously flawed because of their reliance on a library of signatures to detect attacks and makes them susceptible to unknown (zero day) web attacks. Junos WebApp Secure stops attackers in the reconnaissance phase by inserting detection points or tar traps into web application code, these traps detect hackers when they manipulate the detection points during the reconnaissance phase of the attack, before they can establish an attack vector.

Junos WebApp Secure tracks attackers beyond the IP address.  Many legitimate users could also be accessing the site from the same IP address—for this reason, Junos WebApp Secure goes beyond the IP address and tracks attackers more granularly, creating a unique digital fingerprint based on more than 200 unique attributes. The tracking techniques allow you to profile the attacker and record the attack. Every attacker is assigned a name and each incident is recorded along with a threat level based on their intent and skill. Junos WebApp Secure also responds to attackers, frustrating them in their efforts to hack your applications by slowing down the connection for example.

John urged customers to take a trial of both solutions and we urge customers to get in touch with us at Netutils if this is something they would like to explore in more detail.

Outside in Data Centre Security Explained

Does your organisation have mission-critical Web applications?
Are your security  WhitePaperImagesystems for protecting these mission critical web applications as strong as they could be? Even a few minutes of unavailability can have a lasting impact on revenue, reputation and productivity.

Web apps have become the target of choice for cyber-criminals, ‘hacktivists’ and government-sponsored hackers who have learned to evade conventional data centre defenses by targeting application-level vulnerabilities.

Findings indicate that despite large investments in IT security, Web applications in the data centre are not secure. Take a look at this white paper from Juniper Networks which offers the two reasons for a lack of application protection, and how your organisation can achieve absolute protection.

Highlights from ‘Securing the Data Centre, Going Beyond IP’ a presentation by Henrik Davidsson, Director, Security Sales EMEA, Juniper Networks

By David Silsby, Sales & Marketing Director, Netutils

Views expressed in this post are original thoughts posted by David Silsby, Sales & Marketing Director, Netutils. These views are his own and in no way do they represent the views of the company.

Last week was a very busy one for us folks at Netutils as we partnered with Juniper Networks at IP EXPO 2013. It was great to meet up with so many of our customers and meet many new customers equally passionate about securing their networks and data.

One of the highlights of this event was Henrick Davidsson’s presentation on Securing the Data Centre, Going Beyond IP’ on Day 1 in the Security & Governance Theatre.

Here are some key points he made during his presentation:

The Threats are Real
IT Security professionals around the world are faced with a constantly changing battleground when it comes to dealing with cyber threats.  The number of devices that need to be protected within an organisation now averages 3.5 per employee, and 60% of victims don’t discover that they have had a breech for weeks and in some case months and research has shown that the average cost of these breaches is as high as $11m.

Next Generation Firewalls aren’t the Only Solution
Next generation firewalls with their ability to provide application specific visibility and control, active directory integration and the ability to apply policies based on users, devices, locations etc. are a critical part of the defence. However, 60% of security professionals when asked agreed that they are an essential part of the defence, but don’t fully address the problem. We have to always be aware that our security defences are only as strong as the weakest point.

There are two specific areas organisations have to consider – ingress and egress. From a branch and campus perspective, i.e. the end user community, the challenge is to secure the flow of information going out into cyberspace.

From the data centre perspective it is crucial to protect and secure the perimeter from those who are constantly on the prowl trying to steal the ‘crown jewels’ of our data, applications and intellectual property.

DDoS Attacks on the Increase
In a recent survey 60% of companies reported that they had been hacked or been targets of DDoS attacks in the past 12 months. Some of these attacks it appears seem to have been performed ‘just for the heck of it’, whilst others have been specifically targeted and have real malicious intent.

DDoS attacks are often easy to spot as it’s like an army of 10,000 men charging over the hill. However, once we spot them we still have to address the onslaught. Recently however the Diversionary DDoS and APPDDoS attacks are becoming more prevalent. The challenge here is spot these because we might be so busy dealing with the ‘charging 10,000 army’ that we miss the hacker sneaking in the targeted threat that is happening on the flank. A recent victim of this was Bank of the West in the USA during a holiday period when staff numbers were low.  Whilst the attackers launched a DDoS attack they managed to target and breach another vulnerable area and successfully stole $900k from various accounts.

Juniper Provides a Security Ecosystem that Adapts at the Speed of Risk
Juniper Networks’ have two specific solutions to enhance the protection provided by Next Generation Firewalls. Firstly Junos DDoS Secure which provides the ability to use a behavioural approach to detect and stop these low and slow style attacks.

Secondly, Junos Web App Secure , which looks at two areas – Certainty and Specificity. This ensures that you are blocking the right activity without impacting your business, and identifying malicious behaviour that other solutions can’t even start to think about finding.

Using an approach called Intrusion Deception, Junos WebApp Secure can identify attackers with certainty. Unlike legacy signature-based approaches, Junos WebApp Secure uses deceptive techniques and inserts detection points, or tar traps, into the code of outbound Web application traffic to proactively identify attackers before they do damage.

In summary, Juniper provides a Security Ecosystem that adapts at the speed of risk, where allowing easy access is balanced with stopping attackers from getting what they want.

At Netutils we are committed to helping our customers identify their weak points in their defences and then shoring them up to ensure they get the protection they really need. Partnering with Juniper Networks makes that job all the more easy.
